Most people hate being photographed. You feel awkward, you don’t know what to do with your hands, and you’re convinced you look terrible in every shot.
That’s usually because the photographer is rushing through a shot list without actually seeing you. After four decades of portrait photography, we’ve learned that great images start with making you feel at ease. You’ll get clear direction on posing and expression in real time, not after you’ve already left.
The result is portraits that look professional without looking stiff. Whether you need updated business headshots for LinkedIn, family portraits that don’t feel forced, or commercial photography that actually represents your brand, you walk away with images you’ll use, not file away and forget.
We’ve been shooting professionally since 1974 and established Joe Robbins Photography in 1984. That’s over 40 years working with families, executives, and businesses across the greater Houston area, including Shoreacres.
Shoreacres is a small, tight-knit community where word travels fast. Your neighbors are professionals, managers, and business owners who value quality and don’t have time for photographers who waste their afternoon. We’ve built our reputation on being responsive, delivering what we promise, and making the process straightforward.
We’re not the cheapest option in the Houston market, and that’s intentional. You’re paying for experience that means fewer retakes, better results, and images that actually get used instead of sitting on a hard drive somewhere.
First, we talk. We need to understand what you’re using these portraits for, whether that’s updating your company website, creating family heirloom prints, or refreshing your professional headshot. That conversation shapes everything from location to lighting to how we structure the session.
Before we shoot, we’ll address any concerns about lighting, location, or logistics. If you’re worried about looking awkward on camera, we talk through that. If your kids don’t sit still, we plan for that. No surprises on shoot day.
During the session, you get real-time direction. We’re not just clicking and hoping something works. You’ll know how you’re positioned, where to look, and what adjustments we’re making as we go. Sessions aren’t rushed. You’re not on a timer.
After the shoot, you’ll receive professionally edited images with natural skin textures and accurate color. Turnaround is quick, and if you need specific file formats for print or web use, that’s handled upfront. You’ll know exactly what you’re getting and when.
Ready to get started?
You’re getting a full portrait photography session with an experienced commercial photographer who’s worked with everyone from corporate clients to families trying to wrangle toddlers. That means professional lighting, composition, and direction throughout the shoot.
For business headshots, we’ll make sure your image works across LinkedIn, your company website, and any promotional materials. You’ll get high-resolution files suitable for both print and digital use. If you’re updating an entire team’s headshots, we can coordinate a single session day to keep everyone’s images consistent.
Family portraits include guidance on wardrobe, location selection, and posing that doesn’t feel stiff. Shoreacres families are busy, and we respect that. Sessions are scheduled with enough buffer that we’re not rushing through, but we’re also not dragging out a two-hour ordeal when an hour gets the job done.
The Houston area offers great outdoor locations if you want natural light and a relaxed setting, or we can shoot in-studio for more controlled results. Either way, you’re working with someone who’s been doing this since before digital cameras existed and has seen every lighting challenge, every location issue, and every “I don’t know what to do with my hands” moment you can imagine.
Most portrait sessions run between one and two hours, depending on what we’re shooting. A single business headshot might take 30 minutes if we’re working efficiently. A family portrait with multiple people and outfit changes will take longer.
We don’t put you on a strict timer because that’s when people start to feel rushed and the photos show it. If we need an extra 15 minutes to get the right shot, we take it. If we finish early because everything’s working, you’re not paying for time we didn’t use.
For corporate clients scheduling multiple employees for headshots, we typically allocate 15-20 minutes per person. That gives us time to adjust lighting for different heights and skin tones, make sure everyone’s comfortable, and get a few variations without making people feel like they’re on an assembly line.
For business headshots, wear what you’d wear to an important meeting. Solid colors work better than busy patterns, and you want to avoid anything too trendy that’ll look dated in two years. Bring an extra shirt if you’re unsure. We can shoot both and you can decide later.
For family portraits, coordinate colors without being too matchy. If everyone’s wearing the exact same shade of blue, it looks forced. Think about where these photos will be displayed. If they’re going on your living room wall, consider colors that won’t clash with your decor.
Avoid logos, graphic tees, or anything with text unless that’s specifically part of your brand. Clothes should fit well. If you’re between sizes or something’s been sitting in your closet for five years, it probably shows on camera. And if you’re bringing kids, pack a backup outfit because something will get spilled or wrinkled. It always does.
You’ll typically receive your edited images within one to two weeks. That includes professional editing, color correction, and any retouching we discussed beforehand. We don’t outsource editing to some overseas service, so you’re getting consistent quality that matches what we shot.
If you have a hard deadline—say you need a headshot for a conference next week or family photos before someone moves—let us know upfront. We can prioritize rush jobs when necessary, but that needs to be communicated before we schedule.
You’ll receive high-resolution digital files suitable for both print and web use. If you need specific dimensions or file formats for a website, LinkedIn, or print materials, tell us ahead of time and we’ll deliver exactly what you need. No back-and-forth requesting different versions after the fact.
Both. It depends on what works best for your portraits. Studio sessions give us complete control over lighting and background, which is ideal for business headshots and professional portraits where consistency matters.
On-location shoots work well for family portraits, especially if you want a more relaxed, natural setting. The Houston area has plenty of outdoor locations with good natural light. Shoreacres itself offers waterfront areas that photograph well if that fits what you’re looking for.
For commercial clients, we’ll shoot wherever you need us. If you want employee headshots done at your office so people aren’t traveling, we bring the lighting and backdrop to you. If you need environmental portraits that show your team actually working, we shoot on-site. The location serves the purpose of the photo, not the other way around.
A portrait photographer typically focuses on individuals and families—headshots, senior portraits, family sessions. A commercial photographer works with businesses, shooting everything from corporate headshots to product photography to architectural work for marketing and advertising.
We do both, which means you’re getting someone who understands how to make people look good on camera and how those images will be used in a business context. If you need headshots that’ll appear on your company website, in a brochure, and on LinkedIn, we’re thinking about all those applications while we shoot.
That’s different from a photographer who only does family portraits on weekends. Nothing wrong with that, but they’re not thinking about brand consistency, file specifications for print vendors, or how an image will reproduce in different media. After 40 years shooting commercial and portrait work, we’re considering all of that before we even start.
Portrait photography in the Houston area typically ranges from $150 to $500 depending on the type of session, how many people are involved, and what’s included. A single business headshot costs less than a full family portrait session with multiple locations and outfit changes.
We price based on the scope of work, not a one-size-fits-all package. If you’re a corporate client needing headshots for 20 employees, that’s priced differently than an individual updating their LinkedIn photo. If you want both digital files and prints, that’s factored in.
What you’re paying for is 40+ years of experience, professional equipment, proper lighting, and editing that makes you look like yourself on your best day—not an over-filtered version that doesn’t resemble you in person. You’re also paying for someone who shows up on time, communicates clearly, and delivers what they promise. In Shoreacres, where your reputation matters, you want a photographer who treats their business the same way you treat yours.
